Da’Rick Rogers was suspended from the University of Tennessee football program for failing drug tests according to the troubled wide receiver.
Rogers made the admission Tuesday during a press conference to announce his decision to transfer to Tennessee Tech.
“There were a couple of drug tests,” said Rogers. “And it was about me being a young, immature guy and those are things that I’ve got to work on. I plan to do that. When it came to review my next school and I met coach (Watson) Brown I most definitely felt like he was a guy that could help me with all my things and the situation that I had going on.”
The 6-foot-3, 206-pound junior led the SEC in receptions (68) last season and was second in the league in receiving yards (1,040).
Rogers is the second high-profile college athlete to have drug problems derail their careers at Division I programs. Earlier this month, LSU corner Tyrann Mathieu was kicked off the football team following a violation of team rules. His father told ESPN.com that he was checking into a rehabilitation center for substance abuse. He doesn’t plan on playing football this season.
